🔥 DIY Backyard Fire Pit: Boost Outdoor Living in Illinois for Under $100

🔥 I Built My Own Fire Pit — And You Can Too (For Under $100)

A while back, I decided to take on a weekend DIY project: building a fire pit in my backyard. No contractors. No big budget. Just a shovel, some gravel, and a bit of trial and error.

A few hours, a lot of dirt, and one mildly questionable circle later—I had a fire pit I could be proud of. And now? It’s one of our favorite places to hang out on summer nights.

Here’s the thing: you don’t need a big budget to add major value to your home and lifestyle. This DIY fire pit project can be done in one weekend for less than $100—and it looks like you hired a pro.

🛠️ What You’ll Need:

  • Fire pit ring or fire-safe bricks – ~$40–60

  • Pea gravel or paver base – ~$30

  • Basic tools – shovel, rake, tape measure

  • Optional add-ons:

    • DIY seating or budget patio chairs

    • String lights or tiki torches

    • Bricks or pavers to edge the space

🪵 How I Did It (and How You Can Too):

1. Pick a Spot

Flat, open space away from fences or overhangs. I used a rope to mark a circle and just committed.

2. Dig and Level

About 2–3 inches down. It doesn't have to be perfect (trust me!), but level it out as best you can.

3. Add the Gravel

This keeps it looking polished and helps with drainage. I used paver base because it was on sale—but pea gravel works just as well.

4. Build the Ring

I used basic landscaping bricks to form the circle and secured them in place. Fire ring inserts are great too if you want a more finished look.

5. Style It Up

We added chairs we already had, tossed up some solar lights, and now it feels like our own mini retreat.

🔥 Why It Works for Real Estate, Too

Outdoor spaces are huge selling points in today’s market. Buyers want places they can picture themselves relaxing, entertaining, or spending time with loved ones. A well-done fire pit area gives your backyard personality—and personality sells.

Whether you’re prepping for market or just want to make the most of your space, this is one project that truly pays off.
